Both Butterflies and The Test are light stories and although the discrepancy works the former, it does non for the latter. Butterflies is exactly the right length and would be tedious were it any longer. The Test however, reads as a rushed, clumsy, condensed chapter from a very good novel. As for the content, I enjoyed Butterflies for the short, humorous story it is and appreciated its moral. I did non enjoy The Test as much because I was drop deadting just as frustrated as Marian with the hateful driving instructor calling her Mandy Lou and making racist, patronizing remarks. Gibbs assumes the re ader knows the story is set in America, that Marian is an Afro-American and that the reader has basic knowledge of American geography. She also assumes the reader knows that in 1940 the vast majority of Anglo-Saxon Americans considered African-Americans to be an inferior race with a stereotype of having lesser intelligence and coming from down South.

In addition, Gibbs assumes the reader go out recognize that when the instructors pronunciation changes he is imitating a Southern accent.
